Today was an incredibly frustrating experience. My mother and I went to the NSLC cannabis store to pick up some high-quality rolling papers. As expected, they asked for my ID. I replied, "You want my ID? Surely you can tell I'm over 30." Then, one of the employees chimed in with, "We can card anybody." I asked, "Why would you do that to someone?" Her response caught me off guard: "Because we can." I told her that attitude was completely unacceptable. It felt like these employees were on a power trip. These government-run stores are funded by our tax dollars, and they should focus on helping people access products responsibly, not offending them with dismissive remarks like "because we can." While I understand the need to protect minors, the behavior I saw wasn't about responsibility or care. It was about relishing control and creating discomfort.
