Discriminated Against and Harassed at BC Cannabis Store – 3250 Island Hwy N, Nanaimo, BC
Full Statement:
On Sunday May 25th, I, my brother, and our friend—who is a person of colour—visited the BC Cannabis Store at 3250 Island Hwy N #104 in Nanaimo, BC. We are all of legal age, entered respectfully, and had full intention of making a purchase. What we experienced instead was an act of blatant racial discrimination and harassment that left us shocked, humiliated, and deeply disturbed.
From the moment we entered, the employee (or possible owner) immediately treated our friend of colour with hostility. While I and my brother were met with a neutral attitude, our friend was spoken to in a snarky, short, and dismissive tone. It was clear he was being targeted solely based on his race.
When our friend attempted to show his valid government-issued ID, the staff member grabbed it and threw it on the floor, saying, "Get out," with zero justification. We had not raised our voices, caused a scene, or broken any rules. We were polite, calm, and patient the entire time.
We calmly responded by saying this was no way to treat anyone, especially customers who were being respectful. At that point, the staff member escalated the situation further—chasing us out of the store, yelling at us, and aggressively taunting my younger brother in an apparent attempt to provoke a physical altercation.
